What is so rewarding about portraiture is the relationship that develops with the person I’m painting. It’s wonderful to paint friends and family, but meeting someone for the first time and listening to what they have to say and what their experiences have been, very much defines my commission work. I work in isolation but meet the subject a few times before I actually start painting. I may well also revisit that person once the painting is underway. I’ll take photos and chat, so that slowly an idea develops. I’d like to think that it’s the relationship on both sides that enables the portrait to really work.
